About ICCHS

Established in 2016, the International Centre for Comparative Historical Research (ICCHS) is a research centre of the Departments of Art History and History at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Arts. The centre brings together researchers exploring pre-modern social, economic, cultural, and artistic connections or exchanges in the area of the Venetian Republic (both the Domini di Terraferma and the Stato da Màr), the Holy Roman Empire (particularly the Habsburg Erlablande, i.e. hereditary lands), Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. The University of Ljubljana boasts a long tradition of this type of research. We live and operate at an intersection of two former important axes of movement of people and ideas, namely Venice — Vienna and Europe — the Orient, which were marked by the contact of the Alpine, Adriatic, and Pannonian space. We focus on complex historical events in the pre-modern period of the area at hand, as well as their perception and consequences from the 19th century onwards.
The ICCHS collaborates with researchers and similar institutions in Slovenia and abroad. The Centre organizes lectures, panels, and symposia. We strive to participate in national and international research projects. The Centre issues publications and historical sources in the scope of its collection Historia artis.
